Once a year I make a special post, usually for the anniversary of this icon journal in November but so this is super-late but it's a new year so I thought I'd do something more. Warning: image heavy and tl;dr^^

Singapore (January) | California (June) | Palawan (November)

I went to Singapore for a job so didn't get to go around much but loved the metro system and the foliage (yeah, weird things to love but you guys don't live in Manila XD). Went to California to visit family. This was taken in Yosemite in my best "I'm a Lumberjack and I'm Okay" outfit. Also visited a friend in San Diego and got to see the Convention Center. Someday Comic-Con, someday. And then finally El Nido, Palawan which is just gorgeous (not that you can see in that picture--I was too busy trying to take in everything I forgot to get my picture taken properly) and totally worth the dent it made in my bank account.

Composed for 2 movies which surprised me, lazy hermit that I am. These are both independent movies that were made for festivals and haven't had commercial release in the Philippines yet. I'm usually wishy-washy about it, but here's my favorite piece--composed for "...Lilia"

as for my other more steady job, I'm not really particularly proud of anything I made this year. I dunno, three years of making trailers for the same shows has made me a bit stale. but anyway, moving on to the more fangirly stuff...

I found this wonderful website that helps me keep track of everything I've watched, listened to or read last year. So here's what my year looks like in pie chart form:

Movies Watched: 126 [full list]
Favorite 2011 Film: Tree of Life (this is likely to change since I still have a lot of 2011 films to watch :/)
Runners-Up: Martha Marcy May Marlene , The Sleeping Beauty
Favorite Performance: Elizabeth Olsen - Martha Marcy May Marlene
Runners-Up: Hunter McCracken - Tree of Life, Ryan Gosling - Drive, Carla Besainou - The Sleeping Beauty, Andy Serkis - Tintin/Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Worst Film of the Year: Enteng ng Ina Mo - where our "hero" spends the entire movie complaining that his wife is too busy being a kick-ass queen of fairy land to take care of him. Then forces her to choose between him and her kingdom--she chooses her kingdom because it's in danger--and he goes off in a huff and basically cheats on her for the rest of the movie. In the end they reconcile and she apologizes for not making him her first priority and he "allows" her to continue using magic. This is supposed to be a "comedy" promoting "good" family values. WTF?!?!???
Runner-Up: Your Highness - again for being sexist, homophobic and just not funny
Best Poster: Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay - again, I'm biased because my friend made this but it rocks!
Best Trailer: The Hobbit oh that's for next year. I guess the one that stuck to me most was the one for Tree of Life (unabashed Malick fan) and this fun one for the Immortals (though I haven't really forgiven them for the "Girls watch Twilight" shit they pulled in one other trailer.)
Other Favorites (non-2011 films): Blue Valentine, Rusalka, Bluebeard, Mary and Max, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, The History Boys

TV Watched: 65 [full list]
Favorite 2011 Show: Game of Thrones duh.
Favorite New Obsession: QI
Favorite Miniseries: The Fear
Favorite TV Movie: The Song of Lunch
Favorite Hour of Television: Doctor Who - The Doctor's Wife
Favorite Performance: Alan Cumming - The Good Wife/The Runaway
Runner-Up: Jack Gleeson - Game of Thrones
Biggest Disappointment: Doctor Who - I will love this show till the end of time but get it together Moffat! I just hate the way he ruined River Song :(
Runner-Up: Downton Abbey - get it together Fellowes! the show used to have such nuanced characters and now they feel seriously underwritten
Worst Series: Torchwood: Miracle Day - really, RTD, really? i wish we can just forget this ever happened :/

Music Listened To: 51 [full list]
Favorite 2011 Album: Ceremonials - Florence + the Machine
Favorite 2011 Song: The One True Love - Sarah Slean
Runners-Up: Night After Night - Laura Marling, Shake it Out - Florence + the Machine, Give Up the Ghost - Radiohead
Favorite "Discovery": Smoke Fairies (ty indie_exchange!)
Favorite Non-2011 Song: Draw Your Swords - Angus and Julia Stone
Favorite New Piano Piece: Philip Glass's "Morning Passages" from the score of The Hours. it's what practically inspired me to start composing so I finally learned to play it. yay!

Books Read: 34 [full list]
Favorite 2011 Book: How to Be a Woman - Caitlin Moran

um yeah, horrible year for my literacy lol. but in my defense, I did reread a lot of stuff like ASOIAF, Fables that I didn't include in the count. I'll do better this year XD

Obsession of the Year: Iain Glen

I did a progression post last year so I thought I'd do something different and talk about the different styles/techniques/trends I used and abused this year.

Favorite Compositions

ooh, it was so hard to pick favorites, i just kept changing my mind but these just stand out to me. My favorite icon batch is probably the epitome icons for 20inspirations

Favorite Texture

I used this texture by hymnah A LOT. and these are just the more obvious ones.

Gif-ing in tumblr (mostly inspired by iwdrm) made me think of how to convert it to icon form. I'm having a lot of fun experimenting so we'll see how it goes.

Gradient Coloring

Just fell in love with using gradients for coloring. Gradients are awesome! XD

I don't know why but a lot of my icons ended up yellow even though I don't really like the color. lol

Pretty People Looking Down

self-explanatory, really.

Romantic Cropping

I'm a shipper at heart so I just love how cropping can make something totally innocent look shippy.

Manipulated Cropping

and in relation to cropping things more romantically, I learned that when 2 people aren't close enough for it to work, i can just edit them closer together ;D

Manipulated Caps

...or better yet, take 2 different caps and edit them together!

Split Icons

I love this icon trend. LOVE!

Duplicated Caps

sometimes when I'm lazy, and a crop bores me or doesn't work. i just duplicate the image, move it around, and resize stuff until something works.

again, a trick i do sometimes when a crop isn't working.

I used to do a lot of silhouettes in lighten blend mode but somehow last year I stuck to the more traditional masking instead

Random circles, yay!

I should do this trick more often. It's a wonderful way to highlight an area and/or soften a smudged background. in other news, Benny's hands are gorgeous!

I feel like I was too lazy to blend a lot last year.

But at least I tried to be more creative in my blocking

and I vastly improved in my text work, I think.

But my favorite part of icon making in 2011 has to be lighting. Light blobs! Light textures! Light everything!

whatever you want, icons, wallpaper, tutorials, if you have any questions about the icons/tecniques above...just hit me! I need the motivation. haha. You guys know my fandoms: Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Period Dramas, etc...Specific caps would be nice but characters/prompts will do XD

Current Mood: draineddamn allergies :/
